Michael Berg married with a woman, Gertrud, while he was still clerking, and they had a child called Julia. However, Michael never told Gertrud about Hanna. Eventually, they got divorced when Julia was five. Michael felt guilty towards Julia as the divorce denied Julia the warmth and safety she obviously craved.
As Michael was taking his second state exam, the professor who had given the concentration camp seminar died. At first, he didn’t want to attend the funeral as he had to take written exams in that morning. However, he went there as if he couldn’t miss this appointment with the past. In the funeral, Michael recognized a former member of the concentration camps seminar, and they had a conversation. The man asked Michael why he was so interested in the trial, and why he was always staring at the defendant, Hanna. Michael didn’t answer, he just called out a streetcar, “Bye”, and left.
Michael reread the Odyssey. At night, he read to Hanna on tape when he couldn’t sleep for more than a few hours. When he recorded all of the Odyssey, he sent off the tapes to the prison, to Hanna. He also read books of Keller, Fontane, Heine and Morike.
